Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters and Julia Roberts are just a few of her biggest fans. Her sleepwear line that debuted in 1994 has since grown to include infant apparel, loungewear, bedding, journals, housewares and much more. Aside from being a designer, she is also a philanthropist, author and lifestyle guru. Our guest today, Karen Neuberger, gets comfy with Suzanne to talk about how any woman, at any age, can achieve her dream.
The Celebrity Connection
Karen Neuberger didn’t always have a passion for pajamas. Her clothing line originally marketed sportswear, but at the age of 41 and pregnant with her second child, Karen was finding herself at a loss for comfortable, stay-at-home wear. That’s when she decided to take it upon herself to help women across the nation. Her first design, which she coined the “boyfriend pajama” was relaxed yet practical, and could be worn all day. In 1996, Oprah featured these on her infamous Favorite Things show, which ultimately put Karen’s name on the map. Since then, Karen’s designs have been included in two more Favorite Things segments. She also was a guest for Oprah’s Millionaire Moms show, and was featured in Oprah’s renowned book club. Most recently, she appeared with Habitat for Humanity on behalf of Oprah’s Angel Network, where she was asked to decorate the home in her own designs.
The Feminine Touch
Neuberger has always kept the special needs of women in mind. Her Cool/Dry Comfort collection is specially designed to keep moisture from the skin. It’s especially useful to women experiencing difficulty sleeping due to diabetes, menopause, cancer treatments and pregnancy.
She also made a commitment to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer through her Pink Ribbon Signature Collection, which she launched in 2005. All proceeds from the line support breast cancer research.
And she didn’t stop there. Somewhere in her busy schedule, Karen found time to write the book “The Secret Language of Girlfriends,” celebrating women’s friendships. For the past 10 years, she has hosted pajama parties in hotels, malls and offices honoring the life-affirming qualities of the bond between girlfriends.
