Outdoor Decorating

No matter how little space you may have, it’s possible to create cozy and inviting outdoor areas at home. Suzanne visits Barbara Eberlein, President of Eberlein Design Consultants, to learn some tips and tricks of outdoor decorating.

Barbara considers the exterior of a house as being an “extra bonus,” and something that everyone should take advantage of. Adding to or rearranging the exterior of a home can completely change the way you utilize your space -- even the smallest of outdoor areas can be transformed into wonderfully relaxing lounge areas. Utilizing space-saving furniture like folding tables and chairs can significantly increase the uses for your home’s exterior, opening it up for dining, relaxing, and more! In long and narrow spaces, Barbara says that it’s important not to decorate with bulky and round furniture, as it will crowd the area, limiting the options for entertaining.

When making the initial decoration choices for your outdoor space, consider what activities you want to utilize the space for, and how to best facilitate them with your design. If you’re interested in lounging, dining, and extending the use of outdoor area through the different seasons, you’ll most likely want to invest in a table, chairs, and outdoor fireplace. Outdoor spaces with half-height walls allow for both privacy and an open-air feel. Barbara recommends building planter boxes into these walls for a pop of color that won’t take up valuable space. When it comes to color scheme, Barbara suggests working to maintain continuity with similar color palettes. Purchasing plants that will last throughout the four seasons is another fantastic way to add a touch of vibrancy to your space all year round. Above all, Barbara says it’s important to have fun and be creative when designing your home’s exterior as it can be a very enjoyable and rewarding project.
